There are very particular concerns regarding the flammability of cable ties where they are used in public areas and mass transit vehicles. The UL 94 Vertical Burning Test and the ASTM D 635 test are two methods to establish the suitability of various materials to be used in these critical areas. For further information on the test procedures and results please go to Panduit’s flammability information section.
The most cost effective and most commonly used Panduit flame retardant cable tie is manufactured from flame-retardant Nylon 6/6. This meets the UL94V-0 flammability rating recommended for use in public buildings, public transport, tunnels and oil and gas rigs. Their excellent flame retardant properties make them the appropriate cable tie to use in areas where low smoke density and fire resistance is critical. To complement their flame retardant cable tie range, Panduit also offer a range of cable tie mounts in flame retardant Nylon 6/6 material.
Although cable ties manufactured in Halar, Tefzel and PEEK also have a flammability rating of UL94V-0, these materials are mainly used for their excellent resistance to chemicals and radiation and are consequently a much more expensive option if your main concern is flammability.
Of course Panduit stainless steel cable ties are non-flammable and are ideal for use in these public and contained areas of concern. Their greater strength and higher temperatures enhance their suitability in certain situations and they are widely used in the rail, marine and off-shore industries.
